No Goals Against Wins Lake Simcoe Tournament For Caledon Girls

The U11 Caledon Girls Rep Team finished off their 2007 season with an outstanding string of victories at the Lake Simcoe Rep Girls Tournament over the weekend. The girls traveled to the shores of Lake Simcoe for a game at 8:00 a.m on Saturday morning and started the tournament off with a commanding game against East York. Two goals a piece from Rachel De Paulo and Carly Portch and a single by Shelby Wong and a clean sheet by the girls made for an impressive 5-0 victory. The Newmarket A team was next and it was a battle. Once again the girls did not allow a goal and were put ahead on a goal from Carly Portch who was left wide open in front of an empty net on a beautiful pass from Emily Babcock. Saturday ended with the girls at the top of their group.

Sunday was again an early start as the girls headed on to the field against Barrie. After a couple of close calls on the net, Shelby Wong connected with a left foot to put the Wildcats up 1-0 and send them on to the semi finals. Again the girls faced Newmarket, and were able to withstand a first half onslaught with several key stops by Caledon keeper, Alicia Matis. The girls were able to settle down in the second half and went ahead on a free kick by defender, Jackie Iwanski. Not having surrendered a goal throughout the whole tournament, the girls were off to the finals versus Glen Shields.

The final proved to be another defensive battle by both sides. The play was clearly dominated by the Caledon side, but Glen Shields defense couldn't be broken. Keys save by both keepers in the first half led to a 0-0 tie by the whistle. The second half saw a continuation of the Caledon side pushing forward into the Glen Shields side. Finally Carly Portch was able to find an open Emily Babcock in the middle and the resulting shot led to a 1-0 lead and ultimate victory for Caledon. Fittingly Jackie Iwanski, a defender, was named game MVP by the Glen Shields coach!

Perhaps the most impressive stat of the entire weekend was the impenetrable Caledon Goal, in five games they allowed no goals! This was accomplished by the Goal Keeping Tandem of Alicia Matis and Isabelle Hunter, Outstanding defending by Jackie Iwanski, Raquel Delmas, Alicia Murray, Mary Lazzaro and Sarina Costanza, exceptional midfield play by, Madison Krofchick, Olivia Lazzaro, Ali Cannon, Rachel De Paulo, Alissa Condotta, Natasha Caringi, Samantha Lewis and Isabelle Hunter, and an inspired effort up front by Carly Portch, Emily Babcock, Shelby Wong and Nikki Mallow.

The Coaches and girls would like to thank our sponsors, Norus Packaging, CCV Insurance and CosmoProf for giving us the means to take part in a truly rewarding season! And a special thanks to all the parents who supported us throughout the entire year.
