Caledon
Claims U18 North Peel-Halton Girls Soccer Title
Caledon
claimed the 2008 U18 Girls title in the North Peel-Halton Soccer League
at the championship tournament held in Georgetown, August 16 and 17.
The Caledon girls won six straight games in the tournament, accumulating
20 goals for and surrendering only 4 against in the two days of play.
After
notching victories of 1-0, 3-1, 5-0 and 2-1 against teams from Georgetown
and Acton
in its four games on the Saturday, Caledon proceeded to the semi-final
against a
physically large and talented Puslinch team on the Sunday morning. Puslinch
struck
early when a penalty kick deflected into the net off a Caledon defender.
But before the
half had ended, Caledon’s Brittany Brooks tied the score on a picturesque,
end-to-end
solo effort. In the second half, Caledon dominated play and pulled away
on goals by
Haley Hansen and Kayla Nesbitt for a 3-1 margin of victory.
In
the tournament final, Caledon faced the regular season champion, HEADS-1
(Hillsburg, Erin And District Soccer), who had also gone undefeated in
its first five games
of the tournament. HEADS jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the fist half
of the final
game, but two goals by Haley Hansen evened the score for Caledon by half-time.
In the second half, Caledon’s Michelle Littler (who was Caledon’s
goaltender in the first half) notched a natural hat-trick, scoring on
two perfect crosses from Hansen and a corner kick by Nesbitt. Hansen then
earned her third goal of the contest and Caledon held on for a
well-earned 6-2 triumph, and the U18 Girls crown. Excellent positional
play, passing and individual effort by all team members contributed to
the overall team result.
Congratulations
to the Caledon team, which posted a regular season 3rd place finish
prior to taking the championship tournament title. Members of the team
were Nicole
Ruff, Trisha Stevens, Katie White, Shannon Laing, Lisa McCannel, Samantha
de Jesus, Haley Hansen, Lauren Dranitsaris, Michelle Littler, Brittany
Brooks, Megan Bishop, Kirsten Weber, Sarah Ball, Brittany Reinhart, Kayla
Nesbitt, Melissa Avgerinos, Coach Pedro de Jesus and Steve Dranitsaris,
assistant in the championship tournament.
This year’s U18 League included teams from Hillsburg-Erin and District,
Caledon, Acton, Puslinch, Rockwood, Georgetown, Bolton and Milton.
