FIRST GOAL….FIRST WIN…. FIRST
CHAMPIONSHIP!!!
A
weekend filled with firsts for the Caledon All-Star Girls, an
amazing
feat in less than 48 hours! They had a great weekend competing
in the
U13/14 girls division of the 13th Annual 2008 Aurora,
John Traganitis All-Star Soccer Tournament.
Many first time all-stars came together this year to join a few
returnees
and form the team. Off to a slow start, but improving with each
game, it took
the girls eight games over the summer to gel and find their confidence
as
a team. In this tournament, Caledon finished the round robin undefeated
and
tied for first with victories over Barrie and Woodbridge, but
had to settle for
second place based on goal differential. The quarter finals proved
to be a nail
biter as the girls advanced on penalty kicks after surrendering
a very late
goal to a determined Woodbridge squad. Playing with only a one
hour break
due to the shoot out, they came away with a 1 – 0 victory
over Unionville in
the semi-final game. A very tired but excited and extremely determined
group
of girls now focused on the finals and the first place team. A
first half goal by Caledon was the only incentive this squad needed
to band together and push themselves to secure a 1 – 0 defeat
over host club Aurora. A complete team
endeavor was highlighted by the tireless and cohesive efforts
of defenders,
Samantha Morris, Tiana Payne, Samantha Bozzelli and Lauren Thomas.
In the 5 games played, they gave the opposition little to shoot
at, surrendering
a mere 2 goals in all. Midfielders, Julie Vaughan (call up), Corine
Symons,
Brittany Benevides, Kendal Merrill, Kim Langford, Allison Imrie
and
Marisa DiLeo supported at both ends of the field with constant
pressure
and creative efforts while contributing 4 goals. Forwards, Carolyn
Withrow,
Elyse Todd, Meghan McFadyen and Kathryn Steller made the most
of all opportunities by turning many of them into chances and
as a result adding
another 3 goals. Keeper Jordy Martino was solid when called upon,
prompting
the referee’s committee to select her as the U13/14g Division
“Player of the Tournament”. Absent from the tournament
due to injury was Arjaena Sahota.
The club, coaches and parents are very proud of you all for your
efforts and subsequent accomplishments. This weekend’s biggest
accomplishment may
have been the affect that the girls had on the Woodbridge team.
The girls pride themselves on the sportsmanship they exhibit each
time they take to the field,
win or lose. It is obvious that the positive attitude the Caledon
girls had displayed
the day before must have had a huge impact on an opposing team
as a Woodbridge parent was overheard saying “now that’s
what I call sportsmanship”. After what must have been a
disappointing quarter final shootout loss, amidst the very loud
Caledon celebrations, a voice from the Woodbridge side was heard
saying “Quick let’s make the bridge for them first”.
As they went through each others bridges, it was clear to see
that there were only winners on that field and no losers.
WELL DONE LADIES!
