Caledon U13 Girls place Second in 2009 Schwan's USA Cup
The Caledon Wildcats U13 girl’s rep team recently travelled to Minnesota to compete in one of the largest soccer tournament in USA: the Schwan's USA Cup Tournament. This year the tournament brought over 445 teams from all over the world. The squads from USA, Canada, Mexico, Norway, and Brazil made this a truly international event. The National Sports Center in Blaine, MN with its 52 soccer fields provided a phenomenal soccer atmosphere and an unforgettable view of so many games occurring all at once.

The Wildcats arrived on Thursday evening and got settled in their dorm rooms at Northwestern College. The girls had a fantastic time living the dorm life, in spite of the curfew and strict meal times. Games began Friday afternoon and after the first day the Wildcats had 2 wins both finishing with 2-1 scores. Saturday morning was the final game of the round robin which ended in a 2-1 loss but the team still was able to move on to the quarter finals later that afternoon. The quarter final was against a team that was 3-0 with 9 goals for and 0 goals against in the round robin. The Wildcats quickly took control with goals from Mackenzie Neal and Sarina Costanza. Midfielders Emily Babcock and Shelby Wong provided the passes for those goals while a rock solid defensive line of Jackie Iwanksi, Madison Krofchick, Nikki Mallow and Natasha Caringi kept the opposing team struggling to find scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Izzy Hunter put up a wall and stopped every shot that did get through ensuring the Wildcats a trip to the semi finals on Sunday.
Sunday morning came with the first sun of the weekend and the Wildcats had a hard fought game ending in a 1-1 tie after regulation. After only 2 minutes of extra time, Paulina Best curved a corner kick right into the net for the go-ahead goal. Pressure from midfielders Carly Portch and Nicole Celep kept the ball in the opponents end and some hard digging by Rachel De Paulo in the final minutes of extra time took away any chances from the opposing team. The Wildcats were off to the finals!
The final game was a great match with the girls fighting right to the end in a close match. Alissa Condotta connected on a shot from almost midfield to make the final a 3-1 loss but a well deserved 2nd place. Coaches Dave Babcock, Bert Condotta and Paul Iwanski could not be more proud of a team. The young ladies performed exceptionally well on the field and were excellent representatives of Caledon off the field.

Congratulations Wildcats on a fantastic tournament. The team would like to extend a special gratitude to all the parents for ongoing support and especially to the chaperons Josie De Paulo and Penny Krofchick for taking great care of our players at the dorms.
The Wildcats would like to thank our sponsors for all their support for the 2009 season.
